When it
was built in 1920, this store was well on the outskirts of the city.
It was also a sign of the times in terms of transportation. Electric
Tram cars (and eventually the automobile) meant that stores didn't
have to be located in the city's core any longer. Although Simpsons
was built in this west end location back in 1920, it took quite a while
longer for the other large retail spaces we're familiar with now to be
developed. Bayers Road Shopping Centre was completed in 1956 and it
wasn't until 1962 that Halifax
Shopping Centre was open for business.
