VANISHING CITY
Wouldn't it be great to go back in time and wander about this city just taking in what it looked like 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago? I love looking at old pictures of Halifax. I've always had a curiosity about the past. I look at just about any part of the city and wonder, what did this look like years ago? What used to be here? Thankfully in some cases I have a good idea of what it looked like because someone in the course of history has taken a photograph. I like to see pictures of all kinds of structures. Like most people I love this city's heritage buildings and houses. But I see value in preserving the visual history of all structures, be they mundane or grand in design and/or purpose. Which brings me to the reason why I am presenting this page. When the wrecking ball starts to swing, its our last chance to capture a place as it once looked. Maybe its a historic mansion once inhabited by one of the provinces great leaders. Then again, maybe its the old book store where you had your first job. My purpose here is twofold; to capture some structures before they are lost to memory alone and to present them as a future reference to the curious (like myself), and to present some structures that are long gone. Some of these places you may have never seen, or even heard of. Have I captured your imagination? If you know of a structure that's about to be torn down in the city of Halifax, let me know at webmaster@halifaxhistory.ca. I will do my best to get it on this site before its gone. If you have pictures you would like to contribute to this site I would love to hear from you! Feel free to email me at webmaster@halifaxhistory.ca.
